Reef Hooks are a mainsail reef lock which removes compression loads in the boom. A reef hook is installed on the boom (one for each reef) and a soft loop on the sail reef point is pulled down onto the reef hook where it locks in place. The whole process can be controlled remotely from the cockpit.
