Introducing Ronstan Orbit Winches and QuickTrim Technology
Upffront.com

Ronstan Orbit Winches bring together lightweight aluminium construction, Andersen-style Power Rib drum technology and Ronstan’s patented QuickTrim self-tailing system. The result is a compact, low-friction winch range aimed at sailors who want fast, controlled trimming without unnecessary weight on deck.

Originally launched in three sizes — 20, 30 and 40 — Ronstan Orbit Winches have since expanded to include larger 45 and 50 models. The range is designed for performance cruising and race boats where weight, line handling and serviceability all matter.

In this blog, we look at the key features of Ronstan Orbit Winches, how the QuickTrim system works, and why this orbit winch range is technically interesting for sailors comparing modern self-tailing winches.

Ronstan Orbit Winches Key Features

Ronstan Orbit Winches draw heavily on the proven drum and gear design philosophy associated with Andersen winches. Andersen winches have a strong reputation for durability and controlled line handling, and the Power Rib drum profile is central to that performance.

The Power Rib drum design helps maintain grip on the line while allowing smooth release under load. This is particularly important when trimming high-load sheets, where controlled easing is just as important as winching power. The ribbed drum surface is also designed to reduce line abrasion compared with more aggressive gripping surfaces.

Lightweight Aluminium Construction

One of the most important features of Ronstan Orbit Winches is their aluminium construction.

Each orbit winch uses an aluminium central stem and a machined aluminium drum. This makes the range significantly lighter than many comparable self-tailing winches. For example, the Ronstan Orbit Winch 40 is around 700g lighter than the Harken Performa 40 racing winch  - see our Ronstan Orbit Winch 40 vs Harken Performa 40 comparison

That weight saving is relevant on performance cruising boats and race boats, particularly where multiple winches are fitted. Weight saved high and outboard on deck is always useful, especially when it does not compromise the basic mechanical function of the winch.

Ronstan Orbit Winches also use very low line entry heights. This can help with cockpit ergonomics and lead angles, depending on the deck layout. Inside the winch, an additional set of ball bearings carries the thrust loads, while radial bearings carry the radial load. This separation of load paths helps minimise rotational friction under working load.

Ronstan Orbit Winch Range and Sizing

The Ronstan Orbit Winch range was originally launched in sizes 20, 30 and 40 for boats up to around 12m. The range has now expanded to include 45 and 50 models, giving the Orbit platform wider application on larger performance cruising and racing yachts.

The size 20 is a standard 1-speed self-tailing winch. Sizes 30 and above are available with the patented QuickTrim function, which is one of the defining features of the Ronstan Orbit range.

For sailors comparing a Ronstan Orbit winch against other modern aluminium self-tailing winches, the main points to consider are:

- aluminium construction and reduced weight

- Power Rib drum profile for controlled grip

- low line entry height

- bearing layout designed to reduce friction

- QuickTrim functionality on size 30 and above

- tool-free disassembly for servicing

QuickTrim: The Key Technical Difference

QuickTrim is the feature that separates Ronstan Orbit Winches from conventional self-tailing winches.

On a standard self-tailing winch, easing the sheet normally means taking the line out of the self-tailer or removing the winch handle so the line can be adjusted manually. That works, but it adds steps at exactly the point where fast, small trim changes may be needed.

QuickTrim allows the line to be eased without removing the sheet from the self-tailer and without removing the winch handle from the drum. This makes it particularly useful for small sail trim adjustments, where the trimmer needs to respond immediately to changes in wind speed, wind angle or helm balance.

For racing sailors, that means faster reaction to small shifts and pressure changes. For cruising sailors, it provides a more controlled way to make fine adjustments without disturbing the full winch setup.

How QuickTrim Works

The QuickTrim system is operated from the self-tailing arm.

With one hand on the sheet, the user rotates the upper plate of the self-tailing jaw anti-clockwise against spring pressure. This releases the lower jaw so it can rotate, allowing the line to ease out through the self-tailing system.

When the top cover is released, it springs back into position and locks the line securely in the self-tailer again.

The practical advantage is simple: the line remains under control throughout the adjustment. The sailor does not need to unload the self-tailer, remove the handle or re-feed the sheet after the adjustment. For repeated fine trimming, that can make a noticeable difference.

From the factory, the Orbit 30QT and Orbit 40QT are delivered as standard self-tailing winches. The QuickTrim function can be enabled by the user by removing a single screw in the self-tailer. Full operating instructions are included with the winch.

Easy Servicing with No Tools Required

Another important feature of Ronstan Orbit Winches is tool-free servicing.

The winch can be fully disassembled without tools. A spring-loaded release latch, combined with a slight anti-clockwise rotation, allows the self-tailing arm to be lifted from the winch. The drum can then be removed from the central stem.

This is a useful practical detail. Winches need regular inspection, cleaning and lubrication, especially on boats sailed in saltwater. A winch that is easy to open is more likely to be serviced properly.

The locking mechanism also allows the self-tailing arm to be refitted in any one of eight positions on the drum, at 45-degree intervals. This gives useful flexibility when matching the self-tailer position to a specific cockpit or deck layout.

Summary: Why Ronstan Orbit Winches Matter

Ronstan Orbit Winches are a significant addition to the modern aluminium self-tailing winch market.

They combine the proven line-handling principles of Andersen-style Power Rib drums with Ronstan’s own deck hardware development experience. The result is a lightweight, serviceable and technically interesting winch range for sailors looking at performance cruising or race boat applications.

The QuickTrim function is the standout feature. It gives sailors a controlled way to make small trim adjustments without removing the handle or taking the sheet out of the self-tailer. For boats where constant trimming is part of the sailing style, that is a meaningful functional difference.

For 30–40ft race boats and performance cruisers, Ronstan Orbit Winches offer a strong combination of low weight, controlled grip, easy servicing and practical trim adjustment. With the later addition of larger 45 and 50 models, the range now extends further into larger yacht applications as well.
