Andersen sailing winches have a strong record for long-term service and spare-parts support. However, after more than 60 years of product development, identifying the correct winch service kit for a particular Andersen winch can sometimes be difficult.

Different winch sizes, production dates and design versions may require different replacement parts. Some Andersen winches have been redesigned several times, meaning that two winches carrying the same size number may not use the same service kit.

This guide provides a quick reference for identifying your Andersen winch and selecting the correct Andersen winch service kit.

Andersen Winch Service Kit Range

Andersen winch service kits are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 ..... etc and there are approximately 30 different kits. They contain the crucial spare parts for regular maintenance, which is generally replacement pawls & springs, bearings, circlips and essential screws. However, the parts in each kit are specific to each type/size of winch and also vary depending on the age of the winch. Some sizes of Andersens winches have been remodelled 2-4 times and each version can require a different service kit. Therefore it is important to know which Andersen winch you have!

Identifying your sailing winch

Before buying any spare parts or winch service kit it is essential that you know the size/model, year of manufacture and version number. The winch size is clearly visible and stamped on the top of the winch e.g. 46 is size 46. Then it is important to know if you have either a Self-tailing or a Classic winch: If your size 46 winch has a self tailing arm, Andersen refers to this as a 46ST and all plain-top winches are referred to as the Classic range.

Andersen have consistently stamped the serial number information on the top side of the deck flange, between the mounting bolt holes, which is clearly visible when you lift off the polished stainless drum (N.B. on very old winches, a similar stamp was placed on the bottom side of the flange).

The format is always the same for serial numbers: Year, Month and version number (YY-MM-Vxx). For the Electric and Hydraulic motor units a serial number starting with “PS” is stamped on the top flange of the gearbox housing.

The production date is particularly important for models such as the 12ST, 28ST, 40ST, 46ST and 52ST. These winches use different service kits depending on when they were manufactured.

The 46ST has four separate service-kit requirements covering different stages of its production history. Checking the date and version marking is therefore essential before ordering parts for this model.

How Often Should an Andersen Winch Be Serviced?

With appropriate maintenance, there is no reason an Andersen winch cannot remain operational for the life of the boat.

Andersen recommends inspecting, cleaning and greasing all moving parts every two years under normal recreational use.

Annual servicing is recommended where the winches are subject to heavier or more frequent use, including:

- Racing

- Charter operation

- Bluewater cruising

The required maintenance interval may also depend on exposure to salt, contamination, high loads and extended periods without use.

Choosing the Correct Andersen Winch Service Kit

To identify the correct winch service kit, first confirm the winch size and whether it is a Self-Tailing or Classic model. Remove the drum and inspect the deck flange for the production date and version marking.

Do not select a kit using the winch size alone. Where a model has been redesigned during its production life, its manufacture date may determine which internal components and service kit are required.
