Furling Cables
Furling cables and torsional ropes are an increasingly popular and effective method for furling code zeros, staysails and asymmetrical gennakers. There are two types of furling method generally described as Bottom-up and Top-down. Bottom-up furling is for straight luff code zeros and staysails where the sail is attached to the cable thimble at the tack and head and furling starts at the bottom and works its way up the luff. Top-down is used to furl loose luff asymmentrical gennakers. In this method, the tack of the sail "floats" on a swivel and is not attached to the furling cable. when the furl starts the torque is transferred along the full length of the cable to the head of the sail where furling starts and works its way down the luff. Torsional rope is a lower tech, cost effective solution for both bottom-up or top-down furling on smaller racing and cruising boats.
