This range of standard pre-made halyards has been designed to make replacing halyards on your sailing boat quick and simple. They come in three standard colours: grey, navy blue and red.
This is a basic specification for a 1:1 forward halyard (genoa / spinnaker) made from a durable double braid polyester Easycruise, from Italian rope makers Gottifredi Maffioli. At the cockpit end, it is finished with a Flemish eye (to simplify running halyards through the mast) and at the working end it has a covered eye splice plus a Ronstan snap shackle, for connection to your sail. The choice between 10mm and 12mm diameter at this length will come down to the setup of your specific boat and will generally be dictated by your existing sheaves and halyard clutches This 10mm diameter x 40m long halyard is recommended for use on masts with an “I” measurement of between 14 – 16m. However, due to variations in cockpit setups, we suggest you double check the appropriate length for your own boat.
We use the following formulae for 1:1 genoa / spinnaker halyard length:
2.1 * I (Isp) + [distance from mast to halyard winch] + 2m
It is better to have a halyard 2-3m too long than too short!
You can also extend the life of an over-length halyard by re-splicing it and running it in the opposite direction.
