Electric furlers

Electric furlers join the growing list of sailing hardware that thanks to modern electrification onboard reshapes our navigation at sea. Modern solar panels and lithium-ion batteries propel a new era of electrification, offering sailors new dimensions of power supply for boats. Then, the addition of electric furlers will make sail management a walk in the park! Imagine the freedom of sailing without physical demand, where electric furlers easily deploy large sails and furl them quickly when needed. What a game changer for single-handed offshore sailors who just want to enjoy the ride and not run to the bow dropping a large sail into a small hatch. Read more...

Electric furlers for code zero or asymmetric sails are designed to improve handling, comfort and safety onboard with easy installation and low maintenance in a compact unit. We offer electric furlers from the leading furling brands, including Bamar, Facnor and Profurl.

Are these electric furlers made for Code zero or asymmetric sails?

Electric furlers are suitable for both - code zero and asymmetric sails using an adapter to convert from bottom up furling to top down furling. Electric furlers can be relatively slow compared to manual furlers and therefore not ideally suited for top down furling, where speed is very important to achieve a good furl. Primarily, these electric furlers are designed for Code zero.

Are these electric furlers waterproof?

Yes, these electric furling units are completely waterproof and particular attention has been paid to the electrical connections to ensure they are waterproof to withstand the harsh conditions that are experienced on the bow of all sailing yachts.

What are the main features of electric furlers to look out in terms of performance?

The choose the right electric furler you need to know the SWL (Safe Working Load) for your boat. Once you know the correct SWL, the speed (in RPM) and the available power of the electric furler will be the key attributes to compare.

What are the advantages of electric furlers over manual furlers

Electric furlers provide ease of use for older or short-handed crews. With an electric furler attached to the stay you can hoist it into position in the comfort of a marina leaving it furled and ready for use. This can be done at the start of a day's cruise and left in for the whole day being furled/unfurled as necessary in a matter of minutes.

Is it easy to set up electric furlers and convert from a manual furler?

Some brands, like the premium Bamar BWSE furlers, will require a permanent installation into a customized bowsprit. Others, like Profurl NEXe and Facnor FXe are designed to be very easy to mount and dismount. They both have snap shackles to connect the drum to the bowsprit with quick release waterproof connectors which allow the unit to be removed from the foredeck when not in use. The only permanent installation is the power socket close to the bow. You can use your existing swivel and just change out for an electric drum.
