Furling thimbles

A furling thimble is used to terminate a torsional rope at each end by wrapping the cable around the thimble and clamping, splicing or bonding back onto itself. Furling Thimbles are for use with Torsional ropes. They are the interface between the torsional rope and the furling drum / swivel. The torsional rope is wrapped around the thimble and then clamped back on itself over a length of 300mm to 500mm depending on the size of the thimble/rope. What are the important considerations when buying furling thimbles?

It is critical to buy a thimble which is compatible with your furler/swivel jaw width and pin diameter. You also need to be careful of the distance from the pin centre to the back of the Jaw of the furler - to ensure the thimble and rope will fit in the space provided. The thimbles are designed to take specific diameters of torsional rope. The rope diameter must not be too big for the thimble, as the thimble will pull out of the eye in the rope. Most furler manufacturers have their own thimbles designed as a perfect fit for their furlers. However, Upffront worked with LOOP Products to design their range of furling thimbles to optimise one range to work across all furler manufacturers.
